Celebrate the Birthday of the First Woman Director in Film History, July 1, in New Jersey

On July 1, 2011, the Fort Lee Film Commission is celebrating what would have been Alice Guy Blaché's 139th birthday with a graveside ceremony, a reception and luncheon, and a film screening.

The Fort Lee Film Commission will celebrate the birthday of the first woman director in cinema history, Alice Guy Blache of Solax Studio in Fort Lee, on July 1st. The event schedule is listed below. The birthday luncheon will feature guest speakers County Executive of Bergen County Kathleen A. Donovan and Garden State Film Festival Executive Director and 2011 Fort Lee Film Commission Alice Award recipient Diane Raver. All funds raised at this luncheon will go to the annual Jersey Filmmakers of Tomorrow Bergen County High School Student Film Festival and the Fort Lee High School Academy for the Performing Arts in Alice Guy Blaché's name.

  • 11 AM Maryrest Cemetery (770 Darlington Ave. Mahwah NJ) Birthday commemoration at the gravesite of Alice Guy straight through entrance grave is in memorial section on your right.
  • 12:30 PM - Marcello's Ristorante of Suffern (21 Lafayette Ave. Suffern NY - luncheon.
  • 2 PM - Lafayette Theatre, 97 Lafayette Ave. Suffern NY -screening of 2 of Alice's short films and a clip from a documentary on Alice presently being shot.
